Real School Reform

K-12 Testing

Voices of School Reform: Views from the Classroom, a new book from Rethinking Schools, argues that school reform must focus first of all on social justice. The authors, most of whom are public school teachers, explore issues that are often excluded from discussions of school reform, such as teaching critical thinking or race and class biases and policies. One section focuses on standards and testing, in large part through the lenses of racial justice and multi-culturalism. The book contains many ideas useful for teachers and for policymakers and advocates. Edited by Linda Christensen and Stan Karp, available from or 1001 E. Keefe Ave., Milwaukee, WI 53212; (800) 669-4192; $16.95. The excellent quarterly magazine Rethinking Schools can also be ordered.
