NAEP results show failure of test-and-punish schooling

K-12 Testing

Grade 12 math and reading scores on the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) show no gain over the past decade. Recently-released NAEP results are flat or down for African Americans, Latinos, English language learners, students with disabilities, and students in the lowest-scoring 25th percentile. NAEP trends for grades 4 and 8 as well as scores on the SAT and ACT also are flat or in decline, clearly demonstrating the failure of the test-and-punish era. Activists should use these dismal results when pushing lawmakers to overhaul their state accountability systems as allowed under the new Every Student Succeeds Act.
